Macy’s question about the workers?
A few days ago I went to Macy’s to purchase some cosmetics from Shiseido. I wasn’t eligible for credit at Macy’s (correct me if I’m wrong but it’s where you sign up just to get a discount) and I’ve been denied 3 times. The lady in charge of the cash register was actually begging me to try and sign up again after I told her I’ve been denied. After I agreed she was so excited that I never seen her so happy in my life and I grew a little suspicious.
Do the workers there get a little extra cash on their checks or credit for a situation like this?
Also, my mother always has a problem with them when she wants to return something because she says that the workers lose compensation for returns. Is this true?

Macy’s employees have a “Sales Goal” they are expected to meet for the days they are scheduled, so any return under that associates number deducts from the amount of sales they have already acquired that day.
So, if an associates goal is $4500 for a 10-6 shift and hasn’t made any sales yet but had a $200 return under their number, their goal would rise to $4700 and leave her with -4% in her sales.
And with the credit applications, the only incentive associates get are “Macy’s Money” which work like cash coupons redeemable on anything at Macy’s. It’s just that depending on the store, their manager may be pushing them to get credits so they have to push customers.
That ‘sales goal’ per day is a bit far fetched. Sales
representatives for most major dept stores in the cosmetics depts
are generally not the stores employees, but the line they
represent. They are paid based on a commission of their sales. So
whatever is returned is taken as a credit against the potential
commission. That is not per day, but over the pay period. These
employees are also paid by a ‘draw’ system. They are guaranteed a
”living wage” but that money is deducted from any commissions
they receive. The cosmetic line isn’t going to carry a non
performer very long without their meeting the sales goal or they
will seperate the relationship…terminate the employee. As to the
credit promotions… any perks the employee may enjoy is a store
policy. Whether or not it affecst the wages depends on how the
store operates. Cash, days off with pay, other ”perks”, all
depends on the story policy.
