Two weeks ago as I was walking to class, I had placed my bag on a seat so I could save it while I went to the bathroom. To my surprise, when I came back to class, my bag was missing. Likewise, in the same class, I found a missing bag and gave it in to the Lost and Found. However, when I was walking there, to turn the other bag in, I get a call saying that only my wallet had turned up. In all, $400 worth of stuff went missing.

I was very upset with the turn of events, and my classmates suggested that I take the iPod from the other bag as my compensation. I decided against it at first, but in my anger and frustration, I gave in. So when I returned the bag, I kept the iPod. The person who had reported her stuff missing, claimed that her iPod was missing, and though I denied it at first, I RETURNED it out of guilt and shame. However, REGARDLESS of my initial good will of returning her bag, she decided to press charges againt me.

I was arrested and had to spend a night in jail, which, I can say was not a fair or pleasant experience. Now, I am sentenced to ten days of community service and fined $120. I am still suspended from school, waiting for the Dean’s verdict.

I ask you now, what can his sanction be? I suspect that I might be suspended for a year. Which, I believe is unfair. I have never gotten in trouble, ever, in my life. I am a Junior majoring in Biology and Chemistry with a strong 3.1 GPA.

All I really ask is that my name be vindicated. I was wrongly stolen from, and though I had ill thoughts about taking the other person’s iPod, I returned it. I returned her bag, and inevitably returned ALL her belongings. What does that say about her gratitude? She pressed charges against me!

I just want to move on and forget this mess. I have gotten my professors to vouch for me, and all I can do is wait for the Dean’s verdict. All I want to know is that I have been judged fairly, and that the night in jail and fine, is enough punishment for something that was completely blown out of proportion.

I wrote my apology letter and have friends, classmates, professor’s, employers and co-workers writing me reference letters

  1. I think you did the right thing by returning her belongings.
Some people- Heck; Most People wouldn’t even do that!
Im Glad to hear you listen to your Conscience or even have one.
Yeah- It wasn’t right; but you returned it.

I mean if you murdered someone; Then thats a totally different story.
