Why not make the Minimum Wage $50 an hour?
Then everyone would have a “living wage” and be happy!
Haha, yea…right!
Minimum wage laws hurt the low-skilled workers they are intended to help. Raising the minimum wage hurts these workers even more.
Deep down everybody knows it. We all know that if the government raised the minimum wage to $50 an hour, many employees would be laid off. Businesses are not charities; they hire workers only when the workers create more revenue for the business than they cost in wages and compensation.
Some workers, particularly teenagers in part-time jobs, have very low productivity that makes it unprofitable to pay them more than $6.75 an hour. For these workers the politicians’ proposed 15 percent increase in the minimum wage will mean unemployment. In 2004 the Employment Policy Institute studied the impact of raising California’s minimum wage by $1. They found that approximately 18,600 Californians would lose their jobs and in the process would miss out on $220 million in total income.
Whose going to pay that ? The democrats ?
That’s not a very good idea. Let’s just tax corporations and the wealthy to pay for social programs.
Why not do away with the minimum wage entirely and let the market set the wage?
whats the question? Puerto Rico had a major minimum wage crisis that proves your point, just wish there was a question
No one is going to do something like that.
The federal minimum wage should only be raised in small increments, and it won’t hurt the people it is trying to help.
Because it would hurt business if you made it $50. The way it is now is that it hurts workers. The minimum wage can’t be too high or too low. It should be tied to inflation.
I have never known anyone who lost their job when the minimum wage was raised, ever.
I spent years in managerial positions in the food service industry. Not once did I have to fire anyone because of an increase in minimum wage.Prices were raised by very small percentages each time to pay for it.
Another con lie.
Cons dont want to, hence they say unemployment is down, while they are driving the illegals out of the country. And they dont want people to further their education, so they turn to the military thinking they are doing good, but fighting a fake war because the stuttering monkey claimed someone wanted to wack his poppy
This study you quote has been found to be unfounded by many economic professors. Yes people will lose jobs initially but the money saved will be put into other areas where money will be used. What are the alternatives to a decent minimum wage…let people work and can’t afford an apartment? So we have an entire class of workers living on the street? Why work? This will hurt companies just as much.
No one is arguing that the minimum wage should be 50 dollars. There is a big diference between 7.25 and 50 dollars.
Do you understand how much 7.25 is a year? How much food, housing, clothing, health insurance, transportation is a year? Conservative propoganda.
So, how would YOU solve the problem of poverty in this country?
You’ve got lots of criticisms, but I see no evidence that you have any credible solution.
Welfare is a bad idea because it rewards hand-out bums. So why not ensure that people who actualy do work can at least make enough money to get the basics in life. What’s wrong with ensuring that people who work at least 40 hours a week can pay rent on a 1 bedroom apartment and buy groceries?
The idea behind minimum wage is that it ias a matter of social justice that helps reduce exploitation and ensures workers can afford basic necessities. There may be a modest effect on the economy but the social benefit outweighs it. 90% of countries currently have a minimum wage. I’ve lived in nations with no mimimum wage and do we really want the stigma of extreme poverty?
They know how price floors work – they’re not stupid, just obstinate. They’re fully aware that France and Germany have twice our minimum compensation level – and twice our rate of unemployment. They WANT to kick people out of their jobs – the poverty industry needs poor people.
Agreed. I am from the UK and we have a “socialist” party in power at the moment who have adopted a liberal “middle ground” approach. The reason? Exactly what you have just said. Socialism does not work and an increased minimum wage would just hurt small businesses who cannot aford to pay high wages. I had never thought about employment, but yes, unemployment would have to increase as dropping staff would be the only way for these businesses to remain sustainabel.
yah, raising the minimum wage wouldn’t help the economy, and generally speaking the last minumum wage hike we had didn’t affect too many because most people were paying above to keep workers. Taxing the rich wouldn’t help either. The reason this country is so powerful is because we don’t overtax the rich. Alot of the rich people that some people “hate” are actually the ones that help the economy. The rich in this country aren’t lords and ladies of the past. They earned it because their families came worked hard to give their children the life they lead. There aer other rich people who are immigrants, coming in this country and achieved the American dream. Finally there are others who were born here, went to school, got an education and succeeded in life. The rich already pay more than 50% of the taxes in this country, taxing them more only gives them less of an incentive to work hard to make more money, fully knowing it’s going to be taxed. It’s a good stimulous that allows our economy to succeed.
Your post is exceedingly stupid. Nobody can accuse you of being inconsistent, at any rate. Nobody is suggesting making minimum wage $50 an hour. That would be more than a living wage. Much more for that matter. However, anyone who works full time should be able to make ends meet and provide his or her family with things like health care and a good dental plan. 5, 6, or even 7 bucks an hour simply doesn’t cut it. But then people like you have always systematically been against every single initiative ever undertaken to improve the lot of the working man. Can you at least acknowledge that child labor laws and making it illegal to make someone work more than two consecutive shifts without a break were necessary measures, or is that just an example of “commie meddling”?
You sure like to propose the ridiculous to make your point, don’t you?
Actually, “ret_roch_cop” suggested one of the most intelligent things I’ve seen him say.
But I’d invite Stupid Marxist and anyone who’s giving him a “thumbs-up” to get out in the field on a hot day and pick iceburg lettuce with the seasonal workers. It’d probably be the most intense physical labor most of you would perform in a long time.
I could be wrong…just my guess.
Just for your enlightenment, I manage staff that start at basically MINIMUM WAGE, and there’s nothing “soft” about the work they perform on a daily basis. I’ll give any of them as much of a raise as I can.
I really believe that most of the people who whine about this minimum wage thing would not perform the related labor for very long at $6.75/hr.
Here’s a crying towel; suck it up, will ya?
In the state of Oklahoma, minimum wage is $5.15. It seems at this point that Oklahoma won’t raise their minimum wage until Congress does.
So anyone working for minimum wage here are guaranteed $206 a week, $10,712 a year and that is before both state and federal taxes. So therefore, that worker will have to go and get a second job again at minimum wage and be bumped up a little in the tax bracket because now he is earning $412 a week, $21,424 a year.
The cost of living is low here in Oklahoma, but not low enough that a person can maintain on just a minimum wage salary. I make considerably more than minimum wage, but I am still living paycheck to paycheck. I couldn’t even begin to understand what living on minimum wage would be like.
That is why I feel that all of those who are so firmly against minimum wage, should live in the shoes of the person who is currently earning it and see if they still agree with their positions.
are you mad? my husbands buisness would go bankrupt. people who believe that the minimum wage will go up needs to take a business/economics course ASAP
Also, businesses would have to charge unrealistic prices for goods & services. This would hurt ALL consumers and be a no-win situation for everybody.
It would cause massive inflation which would hurt the wealthy and help the working-class.
It’s simple economics. Wealthy people live off of their investments, and if there is a high rate of inflation, their wealth isn’t worth as much.
I don’t understand how anyone can be OK with CEO’s making – what is it 40 times more that their employees? I was happy I got a few thousand dollars of a bonus until I learned that someone only 4 places higher on the scaler chain got more than $2 million, and I was one of the ones doing all of the work!
The point on the question is well received. Let free markets take over. If a job is worth so much, let it pay that much.
So according to the Repugs…
why even have minimum wage?
Heck…Republican kids would love
to work for free, right?
Your an idiot. A Single Mother with no skills, cause shes been raising kids, could work for 40 hours a week, and be able to pay for child care, rent, electricity, gas, water, a car, insurance, and healthcare for her children. Sure buddy $5.15 X 40 hours a week is $206 dollars a week x 4 weeks its $824 a month I’d like to see you live on that, ecpecially when in most places that wouldn’t cover the child care by it self, or the rent by itself. Come down to Texas where we have millions of illegals and see how Americans get paid minimum wage and then you can say that. If you made $7.00 an hour is still only $1120 a month. Thats not enough for 180 hours of work, I hope your job gets outsourced and you have to take a fry job, mabey then you would be christian and care about the people that need help, because the fact is that you would be the one to take the hit if they raised minimum wage because you would be making the same and the poor would be making more, therefore your salary while it remains the same (like the min. wage) will be worth less and less in terms of purchasing power(inflation), i’m so sick of you upper class people spouting these lies. And by the way if you dont make enough to live (i.e. your underemployed) wtf good is it to work and live in a shelter, even though you have a job, and save every dollar. I’d like to see you choose between medicine for your child or a roof over their head, or have to take your child to the emergency room because you dont have money for a doctors visit (so its $800 instead of $100 or $10 if you can afford insurance thats right it costs more to be poor) late fees on rent, electric bills, overdraft fees all things that upper class people will never worry about, tell me these aren’t effectively keeping the underclass poor, just like the minimum wage that was $4 something in the seventies when u could by a NEW car for $3,000. By the way try asking a question not making a statement, thats what Intelligent people do, Idiot Republicans make statements because they all ready have their minds made up, even when like you they have no idea what they are talking about. But at l;east everyone who read your STATEMENT knows that you arent christian, christ helped the poor, he was poor and thats who he ministered to. And wtf is wronge with you republicans, you dont want people on welfare, but your the only reason people are on welfare people who work 40 hours a week, should not have to ask for help (and then not get it) they should be able to live, no ones asking for a hand out, just an honest days pay for an honest days work. Oh and if employee costs go up the dont fire the minimum wage workers they fire you and hire 3 minimum wage workers, and still save money. Your retarded!
Too much rhetoric here… a $50 minimum wage hurts no one… just
changes the figures on your pants, dresses, gas at the pump, and
the cost of a head of lettuce. Oh, and don’t forget the price of
that “two buck chuck” wine you’re buying now. The numbers are not
relative, employers don’t care what the minimum wage is… it’s
just a different number in the account books. Companies/employers
are not going to change the % of their gross margins, or profits.
In 1970 when minimum wage was $1.65, a 1260 square foot house cost
about 25K, that same house, just older, now cost 300K. Thats’ what
minimum wage does…it’s called inflation in most genteel circles.
Do you honestly think any American would be willing to pick grapes
or bend over to harvest any crop for $50/hour vs $7.25… when the
bottle of wine cost went from $2 to $35 ? …. what’s the
difference ?
