How would you feel if your boss pressured you to vote a certain way?
I’d be freaking P.O’d but evidently it’s ok if you’re Walmart
From the WSJ
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is mobilizing its store managers and department supervisors around the country to warn that if Democrats win power in November, they’ll likely change federal law to make it easier for workers to unionize companies — including Wal-Mart.
In recent weeks, thousands of Wal-Mart store managers and department heads have been summoned to mandatory meetings at which the retailer stresses the downside for workers if stores were to be unionized.
According to about a dozen Wal-Mart employees who attended such meetings in seven states, Wal-Mart executives claim that employees at unionized stores would have to pay hefty union dues while getting nothing in return, and may have to go on strike without compensation. Also, unionization could mean fewer jobs as labor costs rise …
The Wal-Mart human-resources managers who run the meetings don’t specifically tell attendees how to vote in November’s election, but make it clear that voting for Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama would be tantamount to inviting unions in, according to Wal-Mart employees who attended gatherings in Maryland, Missouri and other states.
“The meeting leader said, ‘I am not telling you how to vote, but if the Democrats win, this bill will pass and you won’t have a vote on whether you want a union,’” said a Wal-Mart customer-service supervisor from Missouri. “I am not a stupid person. They were telling me how to vote,” she said.
So, if you’re “PO’d”, quit. It’s not your company. Nobody is “forcing” these employees to vote a certain way. They have every right to fire workers who try to unionize if management feels this would negatively effect the company.
Personally I would consider a law suit. I feel it is a direct threat to their employment.
Dude, I would be quitting and I would be kicking the crap out of anyone who dared trying to FEAR me into a vote.
Amused.
That’s how I would feel.
I would feel amused.
Notice that Wal-Mart said: ” Wal-Mart executives claim that employees at unionized stores would have to pay hefty union dues while getting nothing in return”
When in the heck did Wal-Mart start caring about its employees? They’re not fooling me. They’re just afraid they’ll lose control of exploiting employees.
Think about it, when Wal-Mart finally is unionized they will still be the biggest and most competitive store in the world. So why should they care if their employees protect their own interest?

If you’re going to ask a question, at least don’t contradict the premise of your question in the additional information!
I could care less. Unions tell their members who to vote for all the time, but at the end of the day, they can’t find out who their members are voting for. Without that, people can vote without fear of repercussions. Having said that, if one candidate’s going to hurt my employer, raise costs, and force people to pay more at the store, I’d like to know about it to aid in my decision.
