It takes as long as there are time for appeals. The time it takes to get through the back log at the SSA offices... The applicant has 60 days from receiving the denail...1st, 2nd etc. to file the appeal. It would also depend on which benefits you are applying for SSDI or SSI. One is asset based, the other isn't ''Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are not based upon or affected by your other income or assets (means based). Disability benefits are determined by how much a taxpayer has paid into the program (payroll taxes). There are four levels in the Social Security Administration's (SSA) review and award system for disability. It really varies from case to case but most importantly they will give you the back pay for the time that you initiated the process up until the confirmation date. Yes, it can get rough waiting with no income but as the previous person said you can get help during the wait. Doesn't your attorney know? Call up SSA & ask what the law is re: deadline for SSI decisions. In the meantime: Bring proof of your SSI application to Medicaid. Make a separate application for Medicaid. (If you get SSI, you'll automatically get Medicaid). Then take same application proof and apply for immediate Public Assistance or Welfare. They need to make a decision relatively quickly. You can also apply for Food Stamps. You'll have to show proof of how you've been living in the meantime. You might get a letter from a relative/friend stating they've given you room & board but will not be able to continue to do so. Give a date. You'll also need to show proof of ID/residence, but you should have all that if you've applied for SSI. This way you'll have some $ & health care. Good Luck to you.
