  1. It can take a long time because they may not accept you the 1st go round. Doesn’t your attorney know? Call up SSA & ask what the law is re: deadline for SSI decisions.
    In the meantime:
Bring proof of your SSI application to Medicaid. Make a separate application for Medicaid. (If you get SSI, you’ll automatically get Medicaid).
Then take same application proof and apply for immediate Public Assistance or Welfare. They need to make a decision relatively quickly.
You can also apply for Food Stamps.
You’ll have to show proof of how you’ve been living in the meantime. You might get a letter from a relative/friend stating they’ve given you room & board but will not be able to continue to do so. Give a date. You’ll also need to show proof of ID/residence, but you should have all that if you’ve applied for SSI.
This way you’ll have some $ & health care.
    Good Luck to you.

  2. As for my own personal experience it took at least twice of being denied which was between a two to three year period. It really varies from case to case but most importantly they will give you the back pay for the time that you initiated the process up until the confirmation date. Yes, it can get rough waiting with no income but as the previous person said you can get help during the wait.
