How likely do you donate money on behalf of firefighters and police men?

I often receive phone calls asking for monetary donations. The callers identify themselves as firefighters or someone / some organization on behalf of firefighters died on duty, or a police man.
Personally, I see that firefighters and police men are well paid and receive good benefits. Also, they should have their own life insurance because of the nature of the work.
The state law requires an employer offer Workers’ Compensation Insurance to all employees. Do local governments buy Workers’ Compensation to their firefighters and police men?

  3. Much of the money collected by those companies goes to the companies and not to the firefighters or EMS, if you want to give you should give when the firefighters or EMS are holding fundraisers themselves.
Usually the funds raised go to extra things like the widow and children fund, injury fund…they don’t go towards salary or anything like that.

I give what I can, and would give more if I could. They provide a necessary service and I don’t believe they get paid nearly enough!

The average salary for a firefighter in the US is less then 39,000…that’s not a lot and they risk their lives everyday!

  4. I refuse to answer or hang-up on any calls that look like telemarketing calls.

The workers’ comp issue is probably dependent on the state. Minnesota, for one, has a law that requires all employers to either pay into the state workers’ comp system or to privately fund their own.

Just for your personal edification, police and firefighters aren’t all that well paid. My husband is an IT/IS worker and makes way more per year than a firefigher or police officer makes. Generally, any government employee, which includes police and fire, aren’t paid well unless you are very high up in the hierarchy.

  6. those phone calls are a scam. I used to work for a place like that ( not saying all are scams but most likely YA)We called elderly people and rich white folks.By the way, I QUIT in 1 hour of being their. My husband is an Firemen and He only collect money for Jerry Kids Org. or for the elderly in the summer to help buy fans. So, be careful if you want to donate to the fireman’s just but them lunch(they love to eat) !!

  8. Your moniker is quite appropriate! You are quite naive, if you think that a $25,000 or even a $50,000 insurance policy is going to educate all a man’s children and help his wife raise them. The moneys raised go toward the help that is not covered through any other insurance. They are not that well paid. Their compensation is no better than anyone else’s is, when you consider that they all risk their lives to save yours. Would you rather not have a rescuer when you are in dire straits? Any more talk like that and maybe you won’t.

  10. for a police officer yes, to benefits, but there could be exceptions for volunteer firefighters, and poor communities as well for equipment and needs of injured. there are good charities out there that do professional fund raise, it is the easiest and most cost effective way to raise the funds fast especially for new charities. and for many charities it is not the only way they raise funds. there are also veteran organizations that solicit funds over the phone that are legitimate charities as well. there are many instances of fraud that shine a bad light on this aspect, for people to issue a blanket statement saying they are scams and don’t receive money have never researched the charity or the way to receive benefits for that group of people. as with any charity there are fees EVERY state as well as federal requires registration to raise funds and this ranges from $20 – thousands depending on what and where as well as 501 (c)(3) status, legal and financial advice, all legitimate charities have this or a form of this status dependent upon what they do and how the money is used. with any charity there are start up costs that need to be met as well which can run in the thousands, the first year of a charity 0 dollars are expected by governing agencies to go to programs due to high start up costs,, like postage, printing, phone bill, most people don’t work for free (would you) there are ALOT of factors to take into account not JUST they raise money over the phone. look at the existing charities out there VERY FEW will you find that 100% of the funds goto programs even if you donate cash to the dept. directly you have no guarntee what it will be used on i know of an incident it was used for beer for after a call, as far as taking them to dinner how does that help the injured, or equipment, cuz they are not starving. people, everyone needs to give and those that controll the dispersment of funds need to ensure it goes to the programs and people need to quit the slander of this method of fund raising all it does is prove your ignorance.

  11. I will contribute when the locals collect, esp for the volunteer firedept, but the phone calls are mostly scams – 90% to the collectors 10% to the ones supposed to get it.
