Does Washington compensate you if you leave work because of a
non-work related injury?
My husband is going in for surgery to remove a couple cysts in his knee and to fix a rupture and will be missing about a week of work. Now, even though this condition is a result of the years of strenuous work from his job as a construction painter, (present and past jobs), it’s not considered a work related injury. Family members in others states and in Puerto Rico have told me that in some cases, you can recieve some sort of pay or compensation for the time that you are unable to work. I have not found anything online saying that this applies in Washington. Does anyone know anything about this subject?

If you are under the welfare level in income you can apply for various welfare programs
If you are injured on the job and your employer is required to carry workers compensation insurance, he might be eligible to receive money from that. If the injury is not job-related and the employee has elected to purchase some form of disability insurance, he might be eligible to file a claim and receive money from that. Otherwise, no, you do not receive compensation for a non-work-related injury.
My mother has worked for the government for years…. and had a similar situation. She basically had to take leave without pay. She earns a particular amount of leave each paycheck and is welcome to take as much paid leave as she wants… but once she depleats her “paid leave” account, it turns to ‘leave without pay’.
There was really nothing else she could do about it except “eat it”, lost pay-wise…
No mam. It is not Washington’s job to raise us from cradle to grave. That is why there are companies that sell short term disability insurance. This might be something that you would find in a communist or socialist country.
Some states have SDI/State Disability Insurance coverage for
non-industrial injury/illness wage loss… Don’t think WA is one of
those. He should however request FMLA leave…that will provide job
protection, including employer proivded benefits, ie health
coverage, for up to 12 weeks/per annum. With out FMLA, the employer
is not required to hold his job for him when he’s released to
return to work.
