If your record indicates assault-bodily injury over nine years ago and not been in trouble at all can you work for law enforcement?

The short answer is: It Depends.

Different departments have different rules concerning what type of crime it was, how long ago it occurred and what you have done in the past nine years. Even, the FBI is hiring agents who previously used felony drugs (J Edgar Hoover is probably rolling over in his grave).

Look at the department website to see what their requirements are. Be honest about the incident in your application and in your background interview. Be ready to talk about how you’ve matured in the past nine years and what lessons you learned from your crime.

I’m not sure if the crime you describe is a felony and what level of felony it is (in severity). Where you charged with crime X and pled guilty to crime Y? How old where you when you committed the crime ? (i.e 14 years old in jr high you punched someone??)

  2. It all depends on what is on your record. Felonies or any Family Violence type arrests will pretty much automatically disqualify you. Repetitive offenses and a blatant disregard for traffic offenses won’t help. A shoplifting from ten years ago is probably not a big deal. Hope this helps

The short answer is no. It is too much of a liability for a police department to have a sworn officer who has a criminal record. Such an officer would be held up to ridicule and every time he testified in court the defense attorney would bring up his record.

  4. I’d say you get a record once you become a cop. Beating here. Killing there. Evidence planting here and there.

  5. Let me put it this way – if a person was convicted of child molesting 9 years ago and the individual hasn’t had any trouble since then, should they be able to be work at any elementary school or be a baby sister? Whatever your answer is to this one will be the same answer to your question.

  6. Why don’t you just make your application and wait for the law
enforcement agency’s response. That is where the answer to your
quesiton is. Who on a message board would be able to provide a
    valid answer to your question?
